Association of Ukrainian Banks expands international relations: meeting with representatives of the Estonian Banking Association and SEB
On August 20, Petro Pekur, Vice President of the Association of Ukrainian Banks, met with representatives of the Estonian Banking Association and the Swedish financial group SEB. The main purpose of the visit was to expand international relations and exchange experience, in particular in combating financial fraud.
During his working visit to Estonia, AUB Vice President Petro Pekur met with Katrin Taliharm, Member of the Board of the Estonian Banking Association, and representatives of SEB.
The main topic of the meeting was the discussion of cooperation in the field of combating financial crimes and strengthening financial security.
“We had a productive meeting with representatives of the Estonian Banking Association to discuss common challenges and opportunities for cooperation. Our Estonian colleagues informed us that, unfortunately, fraudulent call centers operating in Estonia are based in Ukraine. We agreed to work together on these issues and raise them at the level of Ukrainian authorities. Our Estonian colleagues are ready to share their experience in combating online fraud, which is very important for our country,” said Petro Pekur.
“Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine has become the basis for the spread of fraudulent schemes that exploit the vulnerable emotional state of the population. Criminals posing as bank employees use various methods to gain access to citizens' bank cards. Ukraine is actively combating such networks of fraudulent call centers.
On May 22, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a draft law aimed at establishing liability for electronic communication fraud. The Association of Ukrainian Banks is directly involved in the initiatives of the National Bank of Ukraine aimed at combating financial fraud and improving financial literacy. In particular, the UBA is the general partner of the NBU's educational project “Know Your Rights”.
During the visit, Petro Pekur also visited the Estonian Business School, where he had an interesting conversation about opportunities for startups and FinTech initiatives.
