By the end of 2025, more than half of all transactions in retail-focused banks in Ukraine will be carried out through instant credit transfer services. This forecast is in line with European trends: in EU countries, the share of instant payments may exceed 40% in the coming years. In Ukraine, the basis for the development of this service is provided by the new version of the NBU's Electronic Payment System (EPS-4.1), which operates 24/7 in real time.
This was announced by Natalia Rudukha, head of the GLOBUS BANK project office.
According to her, the main advantage of the instant transfer service is, first and foremost, the speed and round-the-clock availability of transactions.
The main advantage of instant transfers is that transfers from IBAN to IBAN are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Such payments are executed in a matter of seconds: banks set a time interval of “up to 10 seconds,” but in practice, everything happens faster, from 2 to 5 seconds. And users get used to such speeds very quickly, because it is convenient for all parties to the transaction," the banker noted.
As for the current limits, they are quite standard: in Ukraine, there is a limit of UAH 100,000 per transaction. Daily and monthly limits depend on the internal rules of a particular bank.
“The cost of instant transfers depends on the bank's internal rates, with no additional fees charged beyond those rates, as required by the NBU. The limit of UAH 100,000 allows individuals and sole proprietors to carry out up to 90% of all transactions,” the banker emphasized.
At the same time, she drew attention to a number of important nuances that customers should keep in mind.
Instant transfers are made from IBAN to IBAN and are possible both within the same bank and between banks that have connected to the “instant transfer” system.
A series of small transactions. Banks carefully check payments that may show signs of a “chopped up” large transaction.
Payment purpose. It is important to clearly indicate its essence. It is worth avoiding general phrases such as “transfer,” “for everything,” “gift.” Instead, it is advisable to write: “Payment for goods (contract No. ...),” “Loan from FULL NAME,” “Refund,” etc.
Avoiding control. Frequent and massive instant transfers to one person or company may be regarded by the bank as an attempt to avoid financial monitoring. In this case, transactions may be suspended until the details are clarified.
“Important: even instant payments in Ukraine are not always executed automatically — the bank may temporarily suspend them if risks are identified in accordance with the Law of Ukraine ”On Preventing and Combating the Legalization (Laundering) of Proceeds, Financing of Terrorism, and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction," emphasized Natalia Rudukha.
Another feature is that transactions cannot be canceled. Once an instant transfer has been made, the funds cannot be returned, changed, or blocked. Therefore, customers should be extremely careful when entering their details and the amount.
How to join the instant transfer service
According to the banker, to become a user of the service, the client needs to:
Check whether their bank supports the “instant transfers” service. To do this, simply go to the mobile app or online banking (according to the law, all commercial banks must connect to the “Instant Credit Transfers” system).
Find the instant transfer function in the “Transfers,” “Payments,” or “Interbank transfers” sections, or when entering IBAN details, select the “Instant payment” option.
Check with the bank's support service for more info. In most cases, the “Instant Payment” status applies if an individual transfers funds using IBAN details for up to UAH 100,000. Businesses need to set the “Instant Payment” flag in the payment instructions themselves—it doesn't happen automatically.
Global experience
Instant transfers are growing in popularity around the world. According to SBS-Software, in 2024 they accounted for 19% of total credit transactions. By the end of 2025, given the new regulations, this figure could rise to 35–45%, and in 2026 — to 50%.
In a number of countries, instant transfers have a high penetration rate: for example, in Denmark, about 93% of the adult population uses such payments through the MobilePay service.
“With instant transfers, Ukrainians' financial transactions are becoming more convenient, and the banking services market is becoming more modern and progressive, gradually approaching global standards,” concluded Natalia Rudukha.
